A New Assignment

I am undertaking the design of Jekyll and Hyde the Musical for my final senior project. I have already read the script and am to meet with the director next week. My goal, to convince the director that the show should be done in the steampunk style. For those of you who do not know what steampunk is, steampunk is a sort of alternate reality in which the victorian era posseses modern technology in the form of steam engines. A complete sub culture exists around it. As Jekyll and Hyde takes place in London in the 1890's it is the perfect era for this fantastical victorian setting. This video gives examples and better describes the steampunk movement. STEAMPUNK

The World of College Theatre

When most people go see a show, concert, musical, or play, they see the final product of a long and sometimes painful process. They don't see the smudge of paint on the stage left platform that can only be seen if you sit in the extreme seat. Nor do they see that light amist hundreds of others that is slightly out of focus.

For those of us in school for Design/Technology, we are trained to see these minor details that the common audience member cannot. We are the backstage ninjas, the artists who can paint anything from marble to Van Gough, the builders of entire houses in a space twenty by forty feet, the light and sound physicists that can change your mood in an instant. We all work together with the actors, directors, and stage managers to let you slip away for a while into whatever world is presented on the stage.

For the next year and a half I will be finishing up my term at the University. In this time I shall log the crazy events of the world of college theatre.
